Paris France [ENA] Peter Knapp revolutionised fashion photography by setting the models in motion and shooting outside of the studio. The exhibition of the Cité de la Mode et du Design displays 100 iconic photographs illustrating women’s freedom during the 60’s and the 70’s. From March 9 to June 10, 2018.

Peter Knapp was born in Switzerland in 1931. From 1947 to 1951 he studies painting at the Zurich University of the Arts. Otto Bachmann is one of his masters. In 1952 he moves to Paris to attend The École des Beaux-Arts and to pursue his painting works. Then he’s gonna be a graphic designer, and the artistic director of the prestigious department store Galeries Lafayette. He’ll work as well for the magazine Nouveau Fémina. In 1960 Peter Knapp is appointed artistic director of Elle magazine. As the head of the graphic design, he transforms the publication. He promotes a new visual language which corresponds to the changes of this period.

To counterbalance the steadiness of photography, Peter Knapp sets the models in motion : jump, dance, laugh. The modern woman is independent and it shows with the motion of the body. Outside of the conventional atmosphere of the studio, the model is freed and the creative expression illustrates the changes of the society. Through his lens, the photographer sees the woman daring, aspiring, and freed from any constraint. The exhibition brings up 5 themes from the work of Peter Knapp : the ecstasy of freedom, the simple sensuality of the body, freedom from form (from geometry to sequence), a photographic utopia, the era of fashion.
