Paris France [ENA] Azzedine Alaïa (1940-2017) was among the most talented and original designer of his generation. The exhibition "Je suis couturier" illustrates 60 years in the fashion industry with 41 works in the private mansion where he used to work, in the heart of Paris. Selected works by Olivier Saillard.

Azzedine Alaïa arrives in the 50's in Paris, where he learns the technics of dressmaking and start selling to private customers. He worked as well for Guy Laroche, Thierry Mugler and Charles Jourdan. During the 80's, a period of renewal for fashion industry, he decides to create his own brand, Azzedine Alaïa. His style is based on black, white, transparent materials and leather, which give a sexy design with dresses fitting tightly and showing the contours of the body . He became friend with the most famous models and the fashion magazines loved him. Grace Jones inspired him and became his muse.

In 2000 he signs a contract with Prada to develop high-value products, like shoes for instance. Following the advice of his close friend Carla Sozzani, he puts an end to the partnership with Prada, to collaborate with Richemond, the 3rd international luxury group behind LVMH and Kering. Richemond owns Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Montblanc, Lancel, IWC, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Piaget etc... In 2008 , Azzedine Alaïa is made a knight of the Legion d'Honneur, one of the highest honors awarded by the French Government. In 2011 he creates his first Haute Couture collection upon an invitation by the Haute Couture trade union (Chambre syndicale de la Haute Couture) .As a member, he wins recognition in the fashion industry.

Azzedine Alaïa liked to work with colors as well

The building where the exhibition takes place was his design studio, shop, office, catwalk runway and showroom. He said about this place : "I want to create a Foundation like a Maison in my home in the Marais". According to Olivier Saillard, fashion historian and curator of the exhibition , the dresses that he created were a quest for absolute, the expression and the admission of his desire for eternity. Azzedine Alaïa was passionate about all forms of culture ; fashion, art, design, architecture, music, theater. He considered himself like a couturier more than a designer, hence the title of the exhibition, "Je suis couturier" (I am a couturier).

About clothing, Azzedine Alaïa used to say : "I like when they are beautiful and timeless, not cluttered with details, ornaments, and colors that prematurely age them. The simplest are the most difficult to create!". The works featured in the exhibition illustrate beautifully this thought. Walking around the dresses will allow the visitor to understand the spirit of the artist, and dive into a whole slice of the fashion history...
